CRAFTING WITH CAT HAIR. NO, REALLY.

I considered starting a new post category called ‘WTF’ for this book review…

Originally published in Japan by Kaori Tsutaya (founder of niche website, The Cat Hair Craft Room), then translated into English and published in the US last year, this dear little book is now available in the UK, thanks to the eccentric folk at Quirk Books. Now, I have two cats myself. They shed black hair on our white sofa covers, bed linen and carpets. It’s very annoying. But the notion of binning the H&M lint roller and harvesting their manky fluff for handicrafts had – funnily enough – never occurred to me. “Do not shave your cat,” advises Kaori on page one. So far, so good. “To tell you the truth, most cat hair doesn’t look very pretty,” she admits by page nine. Hmmmm. So, the basic idea is, you brush your cat, then use the gathered cat hair to make felt. It’s a bit of a cop out actually – because Kaori just makes disturbing, small, cat-shaped ‘embellishments’ from her cat hair collections, then sticks them on to other felt items – she’s not knitting massive cat hair jumpers / handbags / rugs as I was hoping. But perhaps you’d need a big fat cat for all that…

I didn’t add those speech bubbles BTW. They’re in the book. Yeah. Karoi’s prose is full of useful top tips: “Don’t wave your cat-hair felt finger puppet in front of your cat’s face,” she advises. It seems crafting with cat hair can be a troublesome business… “There can be bad insects in the cat hair,” she warns. “In fact, even the cat-felt finger puppet that I put on the tips of my pens and pencils (instead of a cap) have had holes chewed through them by insects when I wasn’t looking.” Sneaky. Of course, the projects in this book sadly aren’t ideal for everyone. “If you have cat allergies, I would advise against making cat-hair crafts,” says Kaori, wisely. The month-by-month hairball gathering chart on page 65 is a highlight. ‘Nuff said.

Someone gave me a copy of this book for my birthday. I don’t even have a cat…
